Milton Keynes, una ciudad emplazada en el norte de Buckinghamshire (Reino Unido), se adhiere a la base legislativa de las New Towns de tercera generación. A diferencia de otras New Towns británicas, que se fundaron tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial con el objetivo de abordar el problema de la superpoblación y la falta de viviendas, Milton Keynes desafió el paradigma del urbanismo británico. Su génesis, en 1967, estuvo marcada por la influencia de las teorías urbanísticas impulsadas desde Estados Unidos. Por este motivo, la crítica y la revista The Times le otorgaron el sobrenombre de «Los Ángeles de Bucks». Su plan director, de 1970, delineó como objetivos clave: la adopción de una estructura funcional laxa, diversa y libre, la circulación fluida, el atractivo paisajístico, la sostenibilidad y la sensibilización ciudadana. Milton Keynes pretendía plantear una metodología y una estructura que permitiese a la ciudad evolucionar con el tiempo, en lugar de adherirse a un modelo único y fijo de identidad urbana. Aunque no exenta de controversias, elogios y críticas, esta urbe tiene uno de los mayores índices de crecimiento de Reino Unido. Su análisis proporciona una narrativa rica, compleja que va más allá de los éxitos y fracasos convencionalmente simplistas.
